BLUE KING BROWN
WORLDWIZE Part 1 North & South – Rolling Stone, Sep 2010.
Having won the nation’s hearts with a no-holds-bared swagger that hollers substance over style, founding members Natalie Pa’apa’a and Carlo Santone reach for the sky on their two-disc follow-up to 2006′s debut, Stand Up. The likes of ”Say Peace”, “Women’s Revolution” and “Resist” keep the message firmly focused on humanitarian, eco-conscious issues – with Pa’apa’a sounding like a natural successor for Lauryn Hill’s onetime girl-power crown. Soul-cum-reggae-drenched melodies tumble from the pores of this five-piece and, as they flip to a glorious, all-out dub fest on disc two, they’re swept along by the rich, urban expertise of Sly and Robbie as producers (who also join the guest performer roster). Few local acts, bar John Butler, can deliver globally aware music of such precision, passion and skill. Better still, they’re not done yet. As the title suggests, there’s a “Part 2″ promised for 2011. By then their star will most likely be shining very brightly overseas, so savour this moment with one of the nation’s most refreshing voices.
